By contracting taxonomic skills and identification services from FlyEvidence, it enables ecological surveys to accept contracts for taxa that may not have previously been considered due to lack of expertise. This directly broadens the scope of ecological assessment.
Furthermore, FlyEvidence can assist in reducing the burden of bulk samples that are often the result of survey work, especially where knowledge is peripheral to the staff employed for sorting.
Through the Omni digital photo-microscope that FlyEvidence uses, we provide high quality images for reports, advertising, and species catalogues (these help train para-taxonomists in the skills needed to process bulk samples).
Please contact FlyEvidence to discuss potential synergy between FlyEvidence and your company.
FlyEvidence has provided key identification services in a number of pollination studies, resulting in high impact research papers in Nature and Annals of Botany.
FlyEvidence has provided key identification services in a number of biodiversity studies, resulting in high impact research papers in Ecology and Flora.
From experience, the most pragmatic and popular rate for identification of ecological samples is a per specimen rate of £3. On top of this an overhead of the £50 per hour would cover activities not included in the identification price, including fieldwork, literature research, database management and report writing.
It is best to pre-sort specimens so that one specimen/morphospecies per tube is provided. Bulk samples of mixed taxa take extra time to sort and a sorting fee of £25 per sample may be applied. Please discuss bulk samples prior to postage.
Co-Authorship in publications arising from the research supported by our contracts are welcome, but is optional and at the discretion of the principle investigator.
Acknowledgement of FlyEvidence is, however, required in all publications resulting from contracted services please.
