Signal flies, or Platystomatidae, are a family of small to large-sized flies (body length: 1.7–23.0 mm; wing span: 5.0–50.0 mm), often with distinctive patterns on the wing membrane. Some species are of economic importance, but the majority probably breed in decaying organic material (fallen fruit, carrion and dung for example). There are well over one thousand species globally.
